Marketing Strategy Analysis – SAMSUNG case

Marketing is the recess which combines both strategy and tactics in order to build up the relationship with customers and create value for both buyer and seller. (Definition of Marketing, 2014). According to Marina, B. W. (2007), the marketing environment nowadays has become extremely fierce and dynamic, a marketing strategy needs to be updated in order to maintain the competitive strength. An efficient marketing strategy is not only has ability to adapt a change in the market but also satisfy the customers' minds at the same periods. Therefore, there is no marketing strategy could maintain forever but should change at every different suitable situation. To do so, a company might have several alternative plans which probably promptly implement in necessary cases. Samsung Inc. Is one of the outstanding samples in term of successful marketing strategy. Samsung was established in 1 938 in South Korea from the modest company to the global corporation with the annual turnover of over $1ST 1 00 billions. Samsung has generated the business into three majors: â€Å"electronics, engineering and chemicals. This paper is going to examine the marketing strategy which Samsung has applied and give out lessons and recommendations in order to prepare for the future Roth. QUESTION ANSWERING 1. Question 1 Samsung was from the modest company, currently has developed magically to the multi-national conglomerate. Efficient marketing strategies were one of the key elements of Samsung success today that lead its brand value rapidly increased the most in recent years. As reported by Vietnamese (201 2), the brand value of Samsung in 2000 was approximately $1ST 5. Billions. Samsung subsequently expensed $1ST 508 millions in order to boost up its brand value over than $1ST 6. 3 billions in 2001. According to the data collection of Gregory, L. 2005), the brand value Of Samsung Was $1ST 14. 9, ranked as 20th while the first three positions were Coca Cola and followed by Microsoft, IBM with the brand values were $1ST 67. 5 billions; 59. 9 billions and 53. 3 billions. At that period, some competitors of Samsung in the market such as Monika had $USED 26. 4 billions of brand value, ranked at 6th position; Sony had $1ST 10. Billions of brand value, was as 28th in ranking; Motorola was ranked as 37th with $USED 3. 8 billions of brand value and Panasonic was at 78th with $1ST 3. 7 billions in the ranking. As we can see in the figure 1, the rand value of Samsung grew continuously and dramatically from 2001 to 2005 while some the other competitors had a slight fall or maintained at the same level. Table 1: Brand ranking by value in 2005 Figure 1 Brand Value from 2001 -2005 There is no doubt to confess that Samsung has gained a certain success in building brand value through those periods of time.In order to stand stably in this fierce market, Samsung has applied its strategies efficiently and distinctly. An efficient marketing strategy may bring success to its business but a g ood quality of products is what keeps the trust of customers. The more quality of the products are, the more loyalty of the customers will be. Therefore, Samsung has issued a very strict quality control policy. This is one of the factors that bring success to Samsung today. For example, any mistake occurs in its prod action process will be stopped immediately to fix in order to guarantee a good quality and high accurate standard.Based on the global strength, Samsung is flexible in gathering efficient international resources. In 1 sass, Samsung adopted cheap scientific experts from Soviet and hired them to work in the Seoul labs in the early year of 2000. One of the successful innovations, which is introduced at Samsung by those Soviet scientists, is TRIM project. TRIM project is the methodology which identifies the contrary of the existing technologies and the needs of the customers in order to innovate further ideas. Samsung has successfully controlled the products quality. This is the first and the heart in business philosophy of Samsung. Any business needs to understand the customers' perspective and places them at the first concerning. When customers make a decision to try a new product, they would expect a good quail's purchasing. And this is a chance for a business to keep customers' loyalty and increase the prospect of brand by customers' recommendation to their network. So if this was not a case, those customers would not come back and looking for other options. Thus, the quality control policy plays an important role in enhancing the customers' satisfaction and loyalty.Besides, it would help to contribute the long term prospect and revenue of company and avoid the risk of replacement cost of defected products. A company, which has a strong reputation in product quality, will be outstanding in the current fierce market today. One of other successful factors Of Samsung strategy is promotion. Due to different kinds Of product and different segmentations o f customer, Samsung has applied variety ways of promotion and specific channel in order to approach the market. The marketing mix up's strategy has been generated efficiently by Samsung. The company used strong tactics to pull customers to itself by providing printed brochures, posters, specialization sheets and public information on Samsung website, Samsung aimed to raise the awareness of customers. Besides, the activities to be the sponsorship in particular famous events such s: Royal Windsor Horse Show and Samsung Open Tennis Tournament. On the other hand, Samsung gave several interesting offers and discounts to their trade partners and dealers in order to push the sale of Samsung products. All of promotional activities are aimed to support a new product launching. Launching successfully a new product has never been an easy issue, especially it is aimed to dominate other competitors in current market. In asses, Samsung has done an exclusive research in DVD market and understand the problem occurring at that time in order to identify the opportunity. From that, the company could find the suitable way for its tragedy and satisfy the market demands to gain the competitive advantage. For instance, Samsung provided a DVD product with much greater data capacity and sophisticated features, but with the very reasonable price; or taking another product of Samsung is TFTP flat screen monitor, this monitor also provides a greater convenience than CRT screen. The TFTP screen is made by the liquid crystal display (LCD) with sharp displayed image can save a space of the room, lower power consumption and less harmful radiation. This is called the unique selling price that makes Samsung to be the leader in the electronics market. One of the elements of ups strategy is distribution (Place), Samsung has used various channels in the market from the dealers, retailers and distributors and gave free sampling in order to attract more the customers' concern. Due to different kind of product, Samsung has applied a different kind of strategy to approach the market. The market segmentation for the T FT monitors were aimed for business such as officers, financial centers in the city or fashion outlets, etc. In order to encourage the TFTP monitors purchasing from business, the marketing strategy needs to replace n order to adapt a change in a specific situation. The advertisements on this sector focused on potential customers who are business users. Newspapers and magazines were also used for advertising, especially the type of one-to- one advertising, mailing directly to the business users are effectively. Samsung was the newcomer in the mobile business sector in asses. Today, Samsung was ranked as the world's largest corporation in tech oenology industry in term of revenues. The way to do the marketing promotion for this kind of product still differs from the other products. The marketing research ND segmentation were exclusive implemented in order to understand the consumers' demands and segment the potential customers. Samsung still used newspapers, magazines, TV advertisements, media means and to be a sponsorship for famous events in order to raise the perspective of customers in brand recognition. The contribution is more focused on retailers and the retail staff are well trained to be professional. In conclusion, the marketing strategy of Samsung is a valuable lesson to every marketer.Samsung has sought a international quality of product and implemented several marketing strategies in trying to dominate the market. . Question 2 SOOT analysis of Samsung Table 2: SOOT of SAMSUNG Samsung SOOT analysis Strengths Weaknesses Reputation 2. Innovation and design 3. Advanced technology 4. Lower cost 5. It helps to increase the customers' trust in making purchasing decision. Samsung has recently received many possible responses from public then make its reputation continuously grows. 2. Large market share: Samsung has a wide range Of products. Hence, Samsung holds a large portion of market share in almost products they sell. Large market share helps Samsung in reducing costs and more demand in contract cond itions. In addition, it also allows Samsung to earn high return and diversify risks and failures. 6.Samsung was ranked as the top company which has ability to push the brand name efficiently and was ranked at the 9th most valuable brand with $33 billion dollars. This success is caused by the sponsorship in sport champions, social activities, etc. Weaknesses 1. Patents issue: Samsung had problem in patent infringement with Apple. Apple sued Samsung that the Samsung galaxy 4 and Samsung tablet copied phone and pad. This thing seriously damages to Samsung reputation and cost $1 billion dollars in fine. (BBC, 201 2) 2. Lack of its own SO and software: Samsung pay an intention on innovation. However, Samsung has never introduced its own new product with its own SO. Samsung focus on mass market rather than niche market when setting the price of the products at a level of average low. A general psychology of customers is to assume a low price of product is low quality. . Samsung has 3 major markets: Electronics, Engineering and Chemicals and each industry has a huge product which needs to concern. Thus, Samsung loose an attention and advantage in competing with the competitors. Opportunities 1 . The demand on smart- phone market is continuously increasing comparing to electronics market. Thus, Samsung should create its own software for correlative hardware devices. And then, Samsung could launch a new product with outstanding features, has its own SO, user friendly sooner than the competitors could do. 2. The demand on tablet is expected to grow in the next few years. Thus, Samsung could expand this market by launching a new innovative design and better technology quality in order to dominate the market. Threats 1 . Mobile phone market seems to be saturated in almost countries, especially in developed countries. Thus, the purchasing power might not as high as it used to be in previous years. . There is a threat from the companies from China who has ability to produce a product at lower price with a similarity of design and features. R&D in technology 1. Research to explore new market 2. Develop the quality of technology to be superior SO and software 4. Question 3: In the current years, Samsung is one of the biggest manufacturers in term of android smart- phone. They are also successfully in the industry of engineering to sell monitors, TV LCD, etc. Samsung has an incredible growth ate over the time to have this leader position today in the fierce market. (Kristin, L. , 2014). It might be said, 201 3 is the bright year for Samsung to have ability to own the market. However, 2014 might be the challenging year when the Conn's analysis pointed out that Samsung strategy starts revealing its weaknesses. (L an. H, 2014). Smart- phone Galaxy SO was considered as the failure of Samsung in all aspects. The Galaxy SO was blown up its capacity features to conquer all customers in over the world. However, this smart- ph one was only improved modestly in a comparison with the old version Galaxy SO. Even though the turnover for the Galaxy SO was relative high but not as high as the company's expectation.Even though Samsung is still the leader in the market of smart- phone but there is no increasing in the market share in 2013. It means that Samsung has stopped magically increasing as it used to. And the first time since 2011 , the profit of Samsung had a slight decrease in the Q of 2013. In the fierce competing race of smart- phone, while the competitors have ability to produce to a smart – phone with greater incredible features by its own operating system and software, Samsung still eve not given any sudden attack technology and outstanding product.Hence, this is the first failure in the marketing strategy of Samsung in smart- phone sector. Due to CNN analysis, Samsung is not only needed to have a strong marketing promotion but also pay much concern on the quality and outstanding features of the new product. It means that, in 2014, Samsung should set modest goals in order to achieve in certainly, avoiding the disappointment from the customers and deliver a truly changing technology mobile instead of only focus on marketing and bigger screen. Samsung and Apple are the two leaders in the racing of mobile phone industry. In practically, Samsung is the largest player in term of revenue but Apple is more profitable. Samsung targeted to the mass market when setting the price of smart phone at relative low to premium while Apple;s products are set at premium segment. The average price of Apple's products is quite higher then competitors' in smart phone industry and this leads very high margins for Apple. In 201 1, Apple Inc. Sued Samsung when claiming that Galaxy smart- phone and tablet copied from phone and pad. In final, Samsung had to pay $1 billion dollars for its compensation.Yakima, I. K. And Ian, S, 2011). This thing seriously damages to Samsung reputation and cause in d ecreasing profit in 2011. Hence, Samsung still has challenges to compete with Apple. Apple has strong and distinct band which was built for a decade, and now, has its own consumers' loyalty and advantages competitive in the exclusive mobile industry. In order to have ability to beat Apple's products and becomes a dominant in mobile industry, Samsung needs to focus on improving software and operating system. (Luke, W. 2012).A particular focus on technology and strengthen software capabilities must be implemented order to not only satisfy and maintain the current consumers but also to serve new customers' experiment. It is suggested that Samsung could plan to develop its own Bad operating system in order to serve group customers of low- end market. Besides, Doing investment in order to offer a premium product which target at high- end market, higher positioning as higher quality products providers. It helps Samsung to focus on niche market rather than set a product at medium price to serve consumers in a mass market.Besides, Samsung also pays more attention on promotion and selling campaigns for digital products such as Core Digital Technology, Pen Computing, DRAM, etc. 4. Question 4: â€Å"Internal marketing is orienting a motivating customer contact employees and supporting service people to work as a team to provide customer satisfaction. † (Phillip, K and Gary, A.. 2012). According to Burrito and Galley, the important of internal marketing is to make employees are conscious to serve customers well and reinforce their behaviors to perform efficiently.Hence, the concept of internal marketing covers the aspects of HARM, operation and marketing such as in particular: motivation, leadership, structure, delivery system and marketing management The internal arresting is used to enhance the customer focus and market orientation. Even though the term relates to marketing but it uses quite a lot of HER principles because both of the marketing and HER are dealin g with people. Since understanding the term of internal marketing, employees are should be concerned equally to customers because employees are who directly bear theÐ’Â « value to an organization. It is clearly and obviously to see the link between the employees motivation and their performances toward an organization. The higher satisfaction employees are, the better they perform in external services and the faster a company can achieve a goal. Therefore, if a company) only focuses on customers care but lack of employee's motivation, it could meet some struggles. In Samsung Corporation, incentives and welfare program are used to motivate their employees in order to better performances and satisfactions.Samsung has offered a very interesting welfare program to concern only for employees but also for their families about house, education, health and retirement. Besides, employee who has ability to perform outstanding or carry out a significant project is worth to receive an additi onal incentive. Hence, Samsung employees can live and org in the pleasant environmental. (Samsung, 1995) Base on the internal theory of internal marketing, there are some suggestions for Samsung to increase its quality of internal marketing. First of all, it is necessary to create a staff communication in order to listen to their employees' opinions and ides.Besides, it is also useful to have time for briefing every week to discuss about what has been done during a week, is there any problem that needed to be solved timely or share successful stories together. This thing is very efficiently not only in creating a friendly relationship between staff and managers gather but also timely grasp the current operating status of a company. Secondly, Samsung could give to their employee training to empower their relevant knowledge. Besides, employee motivation is always an important part. There are some theories about employee motivation such as Moscow and Herbert, given some factors to fulfi ll the satisfaction of employees. Incentives and rewards could be a positive method to motivate employees. Culture is one of the factors that affects to employee's behaviors. Employees might feel uncomfortable or comfortable due to its company environment. Business to business relationship is important to maintain success of a corporation. Business relationship management (BRB) is different from customer relationship management (CRM), but still simultaneously executes together.BRB is used to enhance the positive relationship with customers. CONCLUSION Executive Summary This paper has been done in examining the successful marketing strategy of Samsung over the past years. And then using Scots to analyze the weaknesses, threats as well as the strengths, opportunities of the company and using TOWS matrix to suggest solutions of taking its strengths and opportunities to cover its weaknesses and threats. Finally, there is a discussion about the internal marketing of Samsung. Samsung was from the modest family company to the top global corporation in this fierce market today is worth lessons for all marketers.By distinct and flexible strategy, Samsung raised its brand value to be ranked at 8th in integrand's Best Global Brands in 2013. An exclusive marketing research is employed to understand the market deeply whenever issue a strategy was effectively performed by Samsung. Personal experiment The case study of Samsung is worth to learn for every business. By observation through this case study, in personality, I could understand these following points. Firstly, every business should set clear goals in both short term and long term in order to step by step achieve them.Segmentation is needed to identify potential customers, and search for the unmet demands IR the market. It is also useful to understand the customers' behaviors in order to satisfy them as good as possible. Secondly, promotion is one of the important factors in marketing strategy. There are several way s of promotions and depend on each specific situation that we could apply a efferent promotion in order to approach the market. For instance, depend on segmented group of customers whether low-end market or high- end market, we could apply a suitable promotion.

Comparison: Claude Monet and Van Gogh

This as not due to a lack in technique or training; this is a style that Monet acquired by using very dappled brushstrokes in his work. The individual brushstrokes portray the different shapes of each object, which enhances the composition of this piece. The overlapping of distinct brush strokes gives the piece depth and a lively quality. For example, the high grass is well depicted as blowing in the wind but this movement would not be as beautifully rendered if Monet didn't use dappled brushstrokes. The Path on the Island of Saint Martin, Bethel has a very rich use of color and rightness that bring a sense of clarity to the piece. Monet uses a variety of color in this piece but sticks to mostly earthy tones which gives the piece a harmonious feeling. Monet did not try to smooth away or diminish the appearance of their brush strokes, which was a popular technique during Impressionism. Another Impressionist â€Å"technique† that Monet used was capturing a fleeting moment. In Pat h on the Island of Saint Martin, Bethel Monet captures the fleeting effects of sunlight that happen throughout that day.Capturing these moments enhances the feeling of a certain impression of the scene. Rain by Vincent Van Gogh is oil painting that was created in 1889. Van Gogh was a famous artist during the Post-Impressionism time period and created artworks that had a strong emotional impact on viewers. Rain has several realistic depictions but stays true to Van Sago's personal experience during the rain storm. Rain has a sad emotional feeling to it, because of the muddy, dark, vivid colors that Van Gogh chose to use.Vincent Van Gogh manipulated many different color lattes in most of his works and he manipulates the colors in Rain by overlapping them to create new tones and shades. The color of the paint that Van Gogh uses perfectly depicts a rainy day; the viewer immediately gets a sense of a gloomy rainstorm when looking at the piece. Van Sago's line work in this piece is extrao rdinary and allows the viewer to experience the rainstorm first hand; his use of long and short diagonal strokes, which cover the entire forefront of the painting, effortlessly depict a rain storm.Van Gogh choose to use thick white strokes of paint to present the rain and it is rendered beautifully especially in contrast to the darker colors in the background. Van Gogh is able to capture the true essence of the rainstorm by painting the piece very blurry. He rejects the idea of the landscape in order for the viewer to focus more on the rain. Behind the blurriness of the piece the viewer can make out a small fence that Van Gogh painted into his piece. The fence is a little asymmetrical, but seems intentional in order to create a sense of depth and achieve Van Sago's perspective during the rainstorm. In comparison, it is apparent hat Post- Impressionism was highly influenced by Impressionism, and there are many similar techniques used in both pieces. Monet and Van Sago's paintings are both portraying an outdoor landscape of a wheat field, but are painted in many different and unique ways. Van Sago's looks as if it was painted wildly and quickly. Motet's piece is clear that he took time to plan each paint stroke. Both oil paintings use earthy color tones but Van Sago's piece has a darker, muddy feel to it because of his technique of manipulating colors.Van Sago's work has a sense of looseness that test the mood and tone perfectly, while Motet's work has a little bit more depiction to objects and the landscape. Both artist use oil paint and keep a thick texture of paint so both pieces have this feeling that they are somewhat Jumping out at you. Motet's piece depicts the landscape quite clearly while Van Sago's piece is much more blurry and he denies much of the landscape. In Motet's piece the trees, landscape, and wheat field are successfully depicted and you can even see some small details. In Van Sago's piece one is more focused on the rain than the blurred out l andscape. Both artists have great use of space that allows the viewer to gain a sense of perspective; Rain seems to be a perspective that was looking down on the wheat filed, while in Path on the Island of Saint Martin, Bethel the viewer is at ground level with the field. In closing, Monet and Van Gogh are very alike in the sense that they both enjoyed painting outdoor landscapes, but they are very different in the way they capture the scenes. Monet strove to capture the essence of a fleeting moment, such as light, while Van Gogh strove to capture the essence of a particular mood or emotion. These two different styles are clearly depicted when walking through the galleries at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Claude Motet's art work all give the viewer a sense of clarity with the use of earthy and warm colors that he uses to paint landscapes. Van Sago's art work often leaves one pondering of his exact emotive intentions were but for most, if not all, pieces the viewer is definitely able to feel an array of emotions while browsing through Van Sago's work. Wellness Industry in India

INTRODUCTION In India, a country where traditional medicinal and health practices like Ayurveda and yoga have promoted the idea of mental and physical wellbeing since ancient times, a new concept of wellness is emerging. No longer limited to health, nutrition and relaxation, the new multi-dimensional definition of wellness encompasses the individual’s desire for social acceptance, exclusivity and collective welfare. WELLNESS INDUSTRY The 2009 FICCI-Ernst & Young (EY) Wellness – Exploring the Untapped Potential report classifies the Indian wellness industry into two segments: wellness services and wellness products.Expected to grow dramatically in the next years, both the segments offer great opportunities to wellness providers. At the end of 2008, the overall industry was estimated at around INR 27. 000 crore (EUR 4. 05 billion1), of which INR 11. 000 crore (EUR 1. 65 billion) represented by the services segment and the rest by the products segment. Recent trends in the wellness services sector Spas: As per the FICCI-EY study, rejuvenation services – including spas, alternative therapies, Ayurveda treatments and beauty services – is expected to witness a 30 percent growth till 2014.In its 2009 report, SpaFinder Inc. counted over 2. 300 spas operating in India, with over 700 to open by 2012 and generating revenues for approximately EUR 264 mil lion annually. As per the FICCI-EY study, fitness services – comprising gyms and slimming centers – will grow by more than 25 percent till 2014. According to the consultancy firm Deloitte and the US-based International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association, the number of people using health clubs in India currently stands at 0. 23 million. Many restaurants are also starting to propose their health-conscious customers special menus. Main international and national players of the wellness services sectorOverall, more than 15 international players in the wellness product and service space have entered India in the recent past and are aggressively expanding in the country. Just to name one, the US-based largest international gym chain in the world, Gold’s Gym has opened 48 gyms since its arrival in India in 2002. This increasing competition from multinationals has compelled national players – including Reliance, Dabur, Manipal Group of Companies, Dr. Batra’s, Kaya Health Clinic – to strengthen and speed up their market expansion strategies. To support the growth, after Talwalkars– one of the leading gym chains in India, with over 100 branches across 50 cities in the country, and over 100. 000 members – and Birla Pacific Spa, also the healthcare and beauty treatment provider Goodwill Hospitals, the drug retail chain Apollo Pharmacy, the diagnostics chain Super Religare Laboratories and the eye care firm VasanEyecare are planning to go public in the next 12 months5. 4 Wellness on the menu, liveMint, The Wall Street Journal, Jul 29, 2011. 5After Birla Pacific Spa and Talwalkars niche beauty and wellness companies planning for IPO, The Economic Times, Aug 25, 2011.While substandard facilities and a lack of qualified staff still characterize the domestic wellness scene, this unsatisfying picture opens further opportunities to international players, which will bring to India their sets of standards of procedures and training programs. Wellness products Including various types of â€Å"modified† foods (e. g. , fat free, low calories, energetic, reinforcing), oils, supplements, integrators, and personal care products, wellness products are gaining more and more space in Indians’ purchase basket. No longer limited to preventive or supportive nutrition, the wellness product portfolio reflects a mix of indulgence, invigoration and narcissism6. Health and wellness food s market Tata Strategic Management Group (TSMG) has estimated theIndian health and wellness foods market being worth INR 10. 150 crore(EUR1. 52 billion) in 2009, with the potential of rising at a compounded annual growth rate of 32. 5 percent to INR 55. 000crore (EUR 8. 24 billion) by 2015. 6 Impulse and Lifestyle Products Define the FMCG Future in India, Roosevelt D’souza, Executive Director, The Nielsen Company, March 4, 2011.HEALTH AND WELLNESS FOODS PROJECTION (EUR billion) 9,00 8,00 7,00 6,00 5,00 4,00 3,00 2,00 1,00 2009 2010E 2011E 2012E 2013E 2014E 2015E Source: TSMG 8,24 + 32. 5% 4,69 3,54 2,67 1,52 2,01 6,21 To capture the growing demand, food brands are in a race to launch new products. Moreover, due to their high prices compared to conventional foods, the lack of credibility of their benefits among costumers, and the not-yet-implemented regulatory framework, the latent market for nutraceutical products is estimated to be two to four times the existing market size. Behavioural Economics Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Behavioural Economics - Assignment Example Thus, this discussion seeks to analyze the cognitive process of organizing, using and keeping track of financial usage for individuals and households, as related to the forecasting for possible attainment of gains or losses. In realizing this evaluation, the discussion will first assess the process of assigning and grouping different financial expenditures into different categories referred to as mental accounts, followed by the evaluation of the factors informing the choice financial spending or investment functions to align with the predicted chances of gains or losses. The Mental Accounting Theory provides an explanation related to how households and individuals keep track of where their incomes are going and how such entities apply active cognitive processes to control their financial spending (Dawes, 2001:47). The difference between conventional financial accounting undertaken by business entities and the mental accounting applied by individuals and households is that; there lacks specific and elaborate rules on how mental accounting procedures should be undertaken. Thus, the process of mental accounting can only be achieved through observing financial behaviors, and then inferring rules to the behaviors, so as to control future spending. Thus, due to the lack of elaborate rules to guide financial allocations to various individual or household spending activities, these entities apply a variety of subjective criteria that sees finances prioritized and allocated to different spending functions, for example based on the sources of the incomes or t he intent for the specific functions (Baddeley, 2013:147). Thus, the Mental Accounting Theory provides that individuals and households irrationally assign different spending functions to a certain asset group, which in turn results in detrimental effects on the spending behavior and consumption decisions subsequently mad by the entities (Tversky & Kahneman, 1981:455). In this respect,

The Great Depression shaped economic theory, social life, and peoples Essay

The Great Depression shaped economic theory, social life, and peoples views of a market economy in general - Essay Example economy or had trades with them (us.history.com). This soon spread to almost every nation in the world. The Great Depression dealt one of the heaviest impacts in the economic stability of the United States. Unemployment rate and taxes went up while income, output and prices had dropped. Unemployment in the U.S. rose from 8 million to 15 million while the Gross National Product (which measures the output generated by a country’s enterprise) decreased from $103.8 billion to $55.7 billion. Farmers have had their struggles, since during that time a draught hit the Great Plains which also caused severe dust storm–this was known as the Dust Bowl or Dirty Thirties. When the stock market crashed, over $40 billion worth of investment was lost (us.history.com). Some banks which invested in the stock market were forced to close. Consequently, many people started withdrawing their savings causing more banks to close down. This eventually made over 5000 banks to fail. Without money to spend, more than 32,000 businesses went bankrupt. Due to the unemployment, crime rate and prostitution incidence went up. Many people became hopeless and depress contributing to the rise of suicidal rates and alcoholism. Mass migration took place almost everywhere. Farmers whose farms were ruined by Dust Bowl migrated to other states hoping to find work there (history1900’s.about.com). Herbert Hoover, who was president at that time, based most of his responses to the Great Depression in his firm belief of volunteerism. He declined direct federal relief payments as he believed it would lose the enticement of working. Hoover has had urged banks to form a consortium known as the National Credit Corporation. These banks are pressed to provide loans to small banks to prevent them from collapsing. He approved the Federal Home Loan Bank Act to spur new home construction and to reduce foreclosures in response to the numerous Hoovervilles (also known as shanty towns or tent cities)

Management of tricyclic antidepressant overdose Essay

Management of tricyclic antidepressant overdose - Essay Example The major use of the drugs belonging to this class has been of course as an antidepressant, but they have also found to be effective in controlling enuresis and attention deficit disorder in children and incontinence in the elderly. Other miscellaneous indications for use are Migraine, chronic pain, neuralgias, hiccups and irritable bowel syndrome. However the Therapeutic Index of these drugs has a narrow margin of safety i.e. the dose level between therapeutic and toxic level is very less. This accounts for several cases of adverse effects and acute toxicity with these compounds. The toxicity is due to the same manner and mechanism of action in which the drug exerts its therapeutic action. Although poorly understood, the TCAs are hypothesized to exert their therapeutic action by preventing the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin by the presynaptic neuron. This results in an increased supply of these neurotransmitters in the synapse, which continues to stimulate the effector cells and organs. It is this constant stimulation that is believed to be responsible for the clinical improvement in depression (Baldessarini, 1989). According to Richelson (1982) TCAs are also competitive antagonists of histamine H1 andH2 receptors. They also block muscarinic acetylcholine and alpha-one adrenergic receptors. The toxicity symptoms and presentations are manifested as central nervous system toxicity in the form of myoclonic seizures, cardiovascular complications like life threatening arrhythmias, asystole, ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. The patient is usually presented with symptoms of orthostatic hypotension which is quite common with TCA use and is independent of the age factor and in some cases is followed by cardiac arrest. Treatment is aimed at reversing the effects of the TCAs by specific antagonists, promoting elimination of the drug and its metabolites from the body and reestablishing

Suggestions for Airlines Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Suggestions for Airlines - Essay Example This paper outlines that customers do not appreciate buying airline tickets at what they think is a fair price, only to find numerous surcharges added to the ticket. The price quote customers receive is misleading. It would be beneficial for airlines to sell tickets up front at the true price – the price of the ticket plus all the taxes. This idea is similar to the way gasoline is sold. A price of $3.19 per gallon is the final price with all taxes included. Similarly, an airline ticket of $319 should be the final price with all taxes included. Someone should not have to buy a $200 airline ticket only to find out the true total is $319. From this paper it is clear that if airlines continue to struggle financially, they should consider making part of the company available to the public via stocks in order to earn some money back. For airlines that are already available in stocks, they should consider releasing more shares to the public. The fourth thing airlines should do is provide incentives to current and potential future customers. The idea of frequent flyer miles does not seem to be working enough to sustain the airlines. Perhaps airlines could take a hint from retailers. They can offer coupons good â€Å"for a limited time only.† Or they could offer cash back good towards a future purchase. For example, for every $250 spent on an airline ticket, the customer receives a $25 credit toward the next ticket. By taking this action, airlines may be able to secure recurring customers. The last thing the airlines could do to help their survival is offer more for the same amount of money. More and more often peop le complain of poor customer service at airports and on airlines. Politeness goes a long way. A lot of courtesy can help retain customers and lack of manners can turn them away. Efficiency needs to be improved as well.

Ignatian Spirituality and Discernment Term Paper

Ignatian Spirituality and Discernment - Term Paper Example The most astonishing fact has been that the Ignatian spirituality has quite a few similarities with much practiced religions like that of Christianity, Hinduism and Buddhism. Ignatian spirituality basically deals with the spirituality of the daily life. It focuses on the fact that God is active in our regular lives and ‘his’ presence can always be felt in the world. Ignatian spirituality was formed by Ignatius Loyola, who was a war - wound. Ignatius was also the founder of the Jesuits. Jesuit Gerard Manley Hopkins noted Ignatian spirituality as â€Å"insistence that God is at work everywhere in work, relationships, culture, the arts, the intellectual life, creation itself†. According to the words of Ignatius, the things in the world are presented to us â€Å"so that we can know God more easily and make a return of love more readily†. The Ignatian spirituality focuses upon discerning the presence of God in the everyday activities of our lives (Ignatian Spirituality, n.d.) Discernment has been always a key issue in the Ignatian spirituality. In fact, the main thought of the spiritualism in this segment depends upon the realization and judgment of God in our daily life. Discernment, according to David Lonsdale, a veteran of Ignatian spirituality, â€Å"involves us in a process of sifting our daily experiences by noting and reflecting regularly on our affective responses to God and to life and its events. It means noting, for example, situations and events in which we experience joy or sorrow, peace or turmoil, attractions or revulsions, an opening out to others or a narrowing in on ourselves, a sense of Gods presence or absence, creativity or destructiveness. The purpose of observing and reflecting on these patterns of responses is that they deepen our sense of ourselves and they can show us where, for each of us, our Christian path lies, where the Spirit of God is

Effects of Nutrition on Human Hair Growth Research Paper

Effects of Nutrition on Human Hair Growth - Research Paper Example In reference to this, the presence of protein in the body means that exist more raw materials to be made into hair. However, it does not mean that the more protein consumed translates to more hair or increased hair growth. Considering that proteins are made of amino acids, the absorption of these amino acids is crucial to the growth of hair; as for healthy hair, all amino acids which are essential for the body should be ingested and digested (The Educational Resource Center of Women’s International Pharmacy, 2003). Moreover, of all the components that make up the hair follicle, lipids are a significant component. These lipids are the result of the breakdown of amino acids through enzymes that are protein in nature. The consumption of fatty substances that are made up of lipids determines the composition of the hair in the form of sebum; of which Sebum, in this case, is a lipid based substance that coats the hair and skin protecting it from the adverse effects of water. In turn , this prevents the growth of microorganisms in the hair and blocks the penetration of toxic substances into the body through the hair. This way, intake of lipids affects the overall wellbeing of the body by creating a protective barrier in the hair (Dunnett, 2001). In addition, as was the case with proteins, lipids are crucial to hair growth, but supplementing intake of fatty acids does not necessarily translate to increased production of sebum and advanced protection and a glossy look of the hair. However, increases in sebum production do increase in some cases leading to improved hair appearance (Dunnett, 2001). In addition, consumption of fatty foods, lipids, contributes towards healthy hair in that they stop it from turning grey. Intake of lipids strengthens the hair by adding to its thickness from the 90% that is made up of protein, collagen (Treasured Locks, 2005). Intake of iron in the body allows for proper circulation of blood around the body various organs; skin and hair included. This way, iron ensures that the follicles responsible for the production of hair are well supplied with nutrients such as protein and that oxygen is supplied in adequate amounts to hair follicles. Furthermore, electrons are transported in the blood with the help of the iron available in the blood; thus by consuming more iron, the hair benefits in that the body synthesises some of the crucial minerals necessary for the total wellbeing of the body and the hair, altogether. In addition, iron works with other minerals that are not so essential such as molybdenum, in detoxifying the body from radicals and breaking down certain products (Arkworld International, 2005). Waste products in the body act as toxins to the body in that they affect the texture, colour and overall appeal of hair. The direct impact of silicon to the hair is seen in what it does to the skin. This concerns the hydrating effect the skin enjoys from adequate supplies of silicon through nutrition. By the skin e xperiencing improved hydration, one’s hair, in turn, benefits from a fine texture emanating from the sebum that is held by the skin giving it a glossy feel and look (Piccardi and Patricia, 2009). In addition to this, the sebum produced from silicon helps in keeping the hair healthy by protecting it from infections, and the adverse effects felt from water. Moreover, silicon toughens hair by making it strong and, as well

Econ Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Econ - Assignment Example Additionally, with a gold standard, the central bank could not apply monetary policy in order to stabilize the economy. More to this, the central bank could not raise the interest rates during inflation and lower them during recession, to stabilize the economy. There was a great deal of disagreements between the modern day Main Street and Wall Street over the central bank representation. There was a feeling among those in the Main Street, that the central bank would not be representative of the whole country, and would thus be a preserve of the moneyed few in New York and Philadelphia. For that reason, both the first and second attempts of creating a central bank failed. Thus, to address these failures, Woodrow Wilson advocated for the creation of 12 Federal Reserve banks located at major cities in the country, making the country end up with 12 regional banks (27). Paul Volcker’s method of fighting inflation in the 1970s involved the introduction of high interest rates, to slow the economy and fight inflation (46). According to him, to break the inflation cycle, then a credible and disciplined monetary policy had to be put in place. With such introduction of a credible monetary policy, the inflation rate fell significantly to 3-4%. The failures in regulations addressed in this lecture include the banks and other financial institutions failing to monitor and manage the risks they were taking under the issuance of house mortgages. Another failure in regulations was the dependency of the firms on short tern funding, such as the commercial paper. There were failures in regulations including supervision, such as the consumer protection. The stability of the financial system as a whole was not granted adequate attention. Prior to the crisis, the quality home loans were financed through the packaging of exotic and subprime mortgages into securities, by the financial institutions. Many of these securities were sold to investors,

Catch a Fire Essay Example for Free

Catch a Fire Essay The book â€Å"Catch a Fire† is a beautiful description of the Jamaican culture, the Rastafarian faith, the growth and development of reggae music and how it all added up to make Bob Marley’s life. All of those elements of what made Bob Marley â€Å"human† will be talked about and explained in this paper. The best artists are the ones who have passed but there work still lives on and Bob Marley left an unforgettable mark on modern music, both as a reggae creator and as a cultural icon. His beliefs and values helped him become a part of the Rastafarian faith and grow into a great musician whose music is still listened to today. The author, Timothy White, did an amazing job describing Bob’s background giving his readers a much greater appreciation for Marley and his music. Jamaicans are often stereotyped as carefree and fun loving. While most Jamaicans do value a sense of humor, as well as music and dance, they also have a tradition of hard work and a strong respect for education. Bob Marley, the son of a black teenage mother and much older white father, was born in Jamaica in the village known as Nine Miles. Born early in 1945, Bob was raised by his mother and relatives and was always surrounded by tales of mysticism and spiritual beings of the Jamaican culture that influenced his daily life. Around the time Bob was born, in 1944, Jamaicans gained the right to vote because of the new constitution. (1) During this time the population grew and there weren’t much job opportunities, leading to an expanding slum population. Class, color, and ethnicity were a big deal in Jamaica and would play a huge role of where you would fit in, work, or even shop. Bob once said, â€Å"I dont stand for black mans side, I dont stand for white mans side, I stand for Gods side. †(2) The Jamaican history has not been a peaceful one, but its struggles have created one of the strongest cultures. The Rastafarian faith was one of the biggest influences of why Bob’s music and the way he lived was the way it was. It all started with Marcus Garvey, who was responsible for bringing Rastafarianism to the islands. Garvey was famous for the saying Look to Africa†¦ (â€Å"Catch a Fire† pg. 8) This statement set the stage for what will be the making of Rastafarianism. Rastafarianism got so popular that when Haile Selassie came to Jamaica in 1966 over 100,000 Rastas surrounded his plane. The late 1960’s is when Bob truly began to find himself and accept his religion and put its beliefs into his songs like â€Å"Rastaman Vibration† and â€Å"Jah Live. † Not only did the Rastafarian faith help Bob with his music, it helped him find who he really was and grow as a person. He finally started to see the beauty in life. Marley started making music in ska and Rock Steady then eventually moved towards reggae as his music evolved. Much of Marleys early work was produced by Coxsone Dodd at Studio One then he signed to Chris Blackwells Island Records label in 1971. Marleys music was one of the main reasons reggae was accepted outside of Jamaica. Although Bob couldn’t escape all the troubles of the ghetto, without music, he would have been right there in Kingston with those rude boys and bad men causing trouble. Music brought out the best in Bob and showed him the true values of life. The â€Å"King of Reggae†, Bob Marley made such an impact on the music industry with his creativity and passion he put into his music and performances. As you can see, Bob would have never made it happen without his Jamaican cultural background, his Rastafarian faith or his love for music. His thinking and beliefs were always voiced in his songs speaking of love, peace, equality and his spirituality. And, after almost three decades since his death, his music is still listened to by millions of people around the world.

The Transformational Leadership Style Business Essay

The Transformational Leadership Style Business Essay This assignment describes the development and transformation process of State Trading Organization Public limited (Here Onward STO). STO strived to provide to Maldivian market, products ranging from staples (like rice sugar and flour), medicine, quality merchandise, and improved construction material, oil and state-of-the-art consumer goods as well other general trading products. Due to newly established democracy and regulations, innovation imported by FDI and service level challenges STO to fundamentally rethink their business and reformulate their strategies. The nation was growing, and so were the nations demands. The organization is established in the year 1964. For four decades STO was known as the market leader. However, it lasted till the industry was opened for foreign and domestic competition in 2005 under economic and political reforms in 2001. Hence, STO foreseeing the competitive and political challenges, the organizing aimed a broader transformation towards becoming a market oriented company. This paper will cover mainly two sections. Firstly, the paper has studied the company background as the introduction of this assignment. Secondly, it has attempted to understand why change is important for organizations to adopt in todays business environment. Therefore, through highlighting on the external factors such as political, Economical, Social and Technological factors (PEST factors) that are as drivers of change, has been given importance as the literature of the subject. Consequently, the main part of the paper: finding the facts, assessing the findings, discussing and analyzing the situation which will help in understanding the strengths and weakness of the subject being studied in this assignment was thoroughly evaluated as the primary component of the paper. In addition, it has given insights into the importance of leadership in bringing changes effectively and explains the opposition and challenges faced by STO. Thus, causing STO to reconsider and reformulate in various business strategies like Leadership, people engagement and change management methods to become customer friendly and improve its image. This assignment will highlight various future challenges awaiting STO and recommendation for actions. INTRODUCTION Company Background The beginning of State Trading Organization Plc, (formerly known as (ATA) Athireege maafannu Trading Agency) is a registered organization. The roots of State Trading Organization PLC, dates back to à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦(website) 1964 when it was opened to finance the purchasing and importation of essential food items needed for the Maldivian community in bulk. Today STO has sustained this important responsibility to oversee the food security concerns of government and diversified into many other areas of importance such as energy needs of the country which has now become part and parcel of STOs mandate. Within the framework that includes these two areas, STO has diversified and is also competitively engaged in trading in other areas including Consumer Electronics, Home appliances, Medicals, Canned foods, Health foods and a range of other high quality products. This has been achieved by direct procurement and distribution as well as forming joint ventures to effectively trade in areas where STO might have been at disadvantage had STO not been able to do so, while still maintaining a strong hold with the Government as the primary trading partner of choice. State Trading Organization plc with its subsidiaries, a joint ventures and associates is a nationwide leader in the business sector. It has significant and focused interests in petroleum, construction materials, electronic items, cooking gas, cement, roofing sheets products, home appliances, super markets and insurance. The company is geographically diverse, with operations and developments in Maldives and Singapore. Diversification is the one of the most important strategies in STO. Therefore STO is entering different business sector like, Tourism, aviation, oil business, construction, agricultural produce and real estate business. METHOD OF INVESTIGATION Most of the information about the various strategies utilized by STO to face competitive challenges was acquired through numerous interviews with managers and employees of STO. Other pieces of information were also gathered through the companys website and local media. The websites and publications of the governments numerous ministries and departments are considered the main sources of information on topics related to the governments policies, regulations and laws. Information regarding trade regulations and policies are taken from the Ministry of Economic Developments annual reports, as well as from the statistical reports that they periodically publish online. In addition to these sources several pieces of information were also acquired through STOs annual report of 2011 and the Quarterly report of 2012 LITERATURE REVIEW The liberalization of Maldives economy and trade regulation has led to market widening , attraction of new foreign investments in well known companys and competition that has led to reduced prices, latest and innovative services, quality products and better customer care. As is suggested by Bortolotti, Bernanrdo, Juliet DSouza, Marcella Fantini, and DomenicoSiniscalco(2002 cited in SilivioContessi 2004 p.3)1the infrastructure investment fosters market interaction and competition through three channels direct market selection, restructuring and entry. As is the theme of this paper, how leadership and people engagement transformed and restructured STO to a market oriented firm to confront the competition from FDI. However, the liberalization was not fully effective due to the certain exclusivities provided to STO such as Government major share. Recent changes in political platform and FDI regulation STO need to be able to adapt different leadership style like, autocratic, democratic leadership Style and other shifting circumstances and cope with those changes (Moment, 2007)2.   Every organization needs leaders who can change as fast as market conditions do (Newcomb, 2005, p. 34)3.   Business needs can change rapidly and employees look to their leaders to guide them through change.   Uncertainty in leaders can lead to a lack of faith by employees. Good leadership is critical to a successful school. Success comes from aiming high with the clear vision, ethos and communication that good leadership brings. We will act to support high quality school leadership and inspired ambitious school communities. (Ambitious, Excellent Schools Our Agenda for Action, Scottish Executive, 2004, p5)4 Research into transformational leadership in organizations has found links to improved employee commitment (Barling, webberKelloway ,1996)5,heightened trust in leadership (Bass B.M.,1990),and stronger connection with the vision (Howell and Shamir,2005)5 and thus alignment of effort with the (change) goal (Shamir,House, Arthur,November 1993 ) cited in cited in Sherry Scully 2008)5. Based on the research results it could be concluded transformational leadership may be more appropriate for STO undergoing transformation where motivation of employees and commitment to change comes from their intrinsic motivation. Future leaders and employee engagement will need to be conversant in doing business internationally and conceiving strategies on a global basis. Globalization will intensify the requirement that senior leaders deal effectively with a complex set of constituencies external to the organization. (e.g., responsibility for managing the companys interface with trade, regulatory, political, and media groups on a wide range of issues). Leadership development is rapidly moving to include substantial components involving international markets, world economic trends, and focus on particular regions such as the Asia Pacific rim (Cacioppe, 1998)6. Kotler and Heskett (1992 Cited inRezaGharoieAhangar 2009)7 identify successful leaders as those who repeatedly communicate their vision, allow people to challenge these messages and stimulate middle managers to take up the cause and provide leadership themselves, characteristics similar to transformational leadership. Likewise leaders foster an environment for building intellectual, managerial and leadership capabilities. The whole concept of transformational leadership linked with HPW is a process by which leaders and followers raise one another to a higher moral and motivational level Burns (1978 Cited in Reza 2009)7.Through this process senior managers share organizations vision to intellectually inspire, stimulate and empower the subordinates. (Bass and Avolio, 1994 cited in Reza 2009)7. 4.0 FACTS, FINDINGS Political Environment In year 1964, Maldives was a very peaceful and stable country. After 2008, the market has become volatile characterized with higher degree of uncertainty and complexity due to our political environment and reform movement. On average new regulations and laws are passed and enacted every month. Along with the democratization process came various legal changes to the economy including the introduction and changes to several laws and regulations, notably, the business profitability tax, Good and service tax, Tourism Tax, Tourism Land Rent, Bank Profit Tax, Duty Free Royalty, Foreign Investment Royalty, Fuel Re-Export Royalty and re-export tax directly influencing the STO business. The fact was highlighted in the STO Annual Report (2011 p.3) as a risk. The newly elected president in 2008 resigned half way through his term and claimed he resigned duress. Many believe its a coup. Therefore, our political environment is at very high risk. This volatile and serious political environment is affecting each and every business of this country. The political situation influenced the business strategies of STO. Hence, most of the decisions were politically driven instead of the business motive. Economical: Global recession hit badly along with the rising fuel prices. It had adversely affected the company in two ways. Firstly, recession has led to fall in income, so consumers are spending less on Home improvement items (like Electronics, kitchen appliance) resulting in decrease sales and increasing storage cost and thus in the drop in company profitability. The unexpected plunge in exchange rate of Rufiyaa against US Dollar, coupled with the continuing problem of foreign exchange shortages caused major impact on the business performance. This was highlighted in the STO annual report (2011 p.7 MDs Message). The depreciation of the Maldivian Currency (Rufiyaa) following the introduction of the exchange rate band in April 2011. Shortage of foreign currency reserve (US Dollar) is affecting STOs business. Because STO is importing most of the items from Singapore, Japan, Dubai and chain. Due to the change in government in 2008, changes to the trade policy and the implementation of new tax laws and regulation brought many challenges to STO in terms of foreign currency transactions. Social: Image of the company: Over the past few decades STO has been one of most leading and reputed company in Maldives (price and Quality).Due to recent changes in political and economic environment, STO is facing many challenges to maintain its reputation. STO is participated and contributed to a number of social activities that are designed to positively contribute to our socio-economic development and towards protecting our natural environment. These activities are in line with the company policy of being an exemplary leader in corporate social responsibility.(annual report 2011p.07) Due to the extensive government intervention on STOs business decisions, STOs reputation and image are affected According to daily newspaper (Haveeru daily) STO is engaging in corruption and fraudulent trading in Singapore. This created bad publicity and tainted the image of the company. Technology: STO understands the importance of developing its technology infrastructure and considers continuous changes in business environment and advancement in technology. In line with this, STO management team decided and implemented the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) to improve productivity, reducing operational cost and improving internal control and monitoring. This system provides day-to-day information to make decisions which will facilitate to transform the future of STO and employee engagement. STO has implemented the human resources module of the ERP system, which will facilitate more efficient management of payroll and other staff related matters(Annual Report 2011 p.07). EFFECTIVELY An organization cannot run without proper vision and guidance of a leader. In todays changing world the role of leadership is even more essential, to show direction towards change, convince employees and finally to set a strong foundation to successfully carrying out change. Faced with Political, Economical and Foreign competition, STO underwent recent changes where by its major strategies were rethought strengthening the whole strategic process through integration, bundling, Diversifying and focusing new industries like, Tourism and Real estate (Annual Report 2011, p.25) .STOs major shareholder the government as well as shareholders have to evolve and transform with the changes to the business environment to achieve a successful future for STO. Hence, the following part gives insight into the topic precisely. Transformational leadership style Developing vision After these major changes in business environment, STO is moving forward to achieve its vision. STO had a vision to become the most successful and the most efficient parent company (of a diversified group of subsidiaries) in the Maldives by the year 2014. Investing on tourism, real estate and aviation (Annual Report 2011, p.25) would allow STO to achieve its corporative goals. Therefore, it has to be noted that STOs vision is in accordance with one of the cores of transformational leadership. HPW and Employee Engagement STO is adopting high performance working practices through SAP ERP system. The system helps to align a complex set of organizational elements including Strategy, vision, Mission, and goal, management practice, organizational structure, work practices and process human resource and other systems such as technology. Continuous high performance work systems have been cited by STO and the company is now transitioning to a high performance working system. This will require the development of a strong communication system and organizational restructuring. CONCLUSION Transforming whole business environment in Maldives (PEST) factors are affecting STO business. Domestic and international competition STO has managed to retain its market position. As new challenges emerge the change process will be an ongoing process to maintain market position. As now STO has completely lost its remaining exclusivities it will face new challenges from Multinational chain like (ACE hardware) over retaining customers. Excellent HR practices and efforts retain existing employees as well as new. Therefore STO needs to be more proactive to these changes, which can be perceived by the knowledgeable among the corporate: Even though STO is government owned company (Major Shareholders), too much of government influence and political motive decision may not be business and profit oriented. It should be balanced in terms of politics and profit or business. As STO faces new challenges due to implementing EPR system, lack of trained employees. Therefore STO need to Investing in training programs helps employees develop personally and professionally to adopt this incremental changes in its processes and operation especially the way HR works, good and services are delivered to the end customer for this transformational change alone will not do. STO need to implement more monitoring and control mechanism to employee recruitment, Conflict resolution at workplace. Shakespeares Hamlet - Claudius Essay -- GCSE English Literature Cours

Claudius of Shakespeare's Hamlet’s G. Wilson Knight in "The Embassy of Death" interprets the character of Claudius in Shakespeare’s Hamlet: Claudius, as he appears in the play, is not a criminal. He is - strange as it may seem - a good and gentle king, enmeshed by the chain of causality linking him with his crime. And this chain he might, perhaps, have broken except for Hamlet, and all would have been well. But, granted the presence of Hamlet - which Claudius at first genuinely desired, persuading him not to return to Wittenberg as he wished - and granted the fact of his original crime which cannot now be altered, Claudius cannot now be blamed for his later actions. They are forced on him. As King, he could scarcely be expected to do otherwise. (n. pag.) This essay, with the involvement of various literary critics, will consider Knight’s evaluation in light of others’, and will thoroughly delineate the character of King Claudius, show his place in the drama, and interpret his character. The drama opens after Hamlet has just returned from Wittenberg, England, where he has been a student. What brought him home was the news of his father’s death and his father’s brother’s quick accession to the throne of Denmark. Philip Burton in â€Å"Hamlet† discusses Claudius’ sudden rise to the Danish throne upon the death of King Hamlet I: The fact that Claudius has become king is not really surprising. Only late in the play does Hamlet complain that his uncle had "popped in between the election and my hopes." The country had been in a nervous state expecting an invasion by young Fortinbras, at the head of a lawless band of adventurers, in revenge for his father’s death at the hands of King Hamlet. Almost A Woman Essays -- essays research papers

In the autobiography Almost A Woman by Esmeralda Santiago, there are many cultural differences. She feels alienated from the rest of the people in New York or the United States, for that matter. When Esmeralda was thirteen she moved to New York with her family from Puerto Rico. She did not know a word of English nor did she have any idea of what the American culture was like. To top off her ignorance of the American culture, she was poor, making her more of an outcast. As she was growing up in the United States, most people related her to the only Latin people they had ever seen, who were Desi Arnaz from "I Love Lucy" and Rita Moreno from "West Side Story". She hated those assumptions; they were inaccurate. Desi Arnaz played to role of a Cuban musician who was married to an American and was always put as the dumb, ignorant Hispanic who was sometimes lost in the ideas of the American. Some of that is true, but she didn’t like the idea that people thought she was dumb just because the American culture was new to her. The other person that most people related her to was Rita Moreno’s character in "West Side Story". Esmeralda hated this one even more. Moreno’s character was a Puerto Rican girl named Maria caught in the middle of a gang rivalry. Esmeralda thought they portrayed Maria as a whore because of the way she dressed and the way she acted towards men....

How does the Internet Affect Young People? Essay

How does the Internet Affect Young People? There is a saying among the baby boomer generation, that if you want to learn how to use computers and the internet, go ask your grandchildren to teach you. An estimated 100% of all young people use computers with more than 90% regularly using the internet. Much of this internet use is tied to homework and websites needed to do research. However the internet is also the way most kids connect after school using social networks such as MySpace or Facebook. The kids communicate through chat rooms and emails, while also posting comments on their friends’ walls. Internet usage is so pervasive that many experts, scientists and psychologist have begun to study what effect it has on the lives of young people in general. With so much social action taking place from behind a computer screen, adults and teachers are concerned about the loss of social skills among young people. In other words, the ability to communicate up close and personal with friends and family is becoming extinct. Young people simply don’t know how to hold a conversation. Take away a kid’s cell phone or computer and they tend to withdraw, don’t know what to do with their hands, become sullen. Hours in front of a computer on the internet also lends to the obesity problem plaguing America and the rest of the world. And a lack of exercise isn’t the only physical problem. Eyesight wanes after long hours in front of a computer screen. Bad posture, and body pain can develop from long hours spent sitting, not the least of which is bad circulation in the legs. Many young people who spend a great of time in front of computer are beginning to show symptoms of disease and illness not usually seen until someone reac hes middle age or senior citizenship. There are also many upsides to time spent in front of a computer. Young people today are able to log on and talk to their counterparts growing up in other parts of the world. The internet literally opens up the possibilities of world culture them enabling them to understand and to appreciate diversity. Painfully shy people unable to hold a face to face conversations can go online and talk for hours with someone elsewhere in the world, who  may be in a similar situation at home. The internet enables young people to find answers to questions that they may not feel comfortable discussing with their parents and friends and teachers. An example of this might be sex education, which is only given cursory attention in most American schools. Some studies have even shown that young people who regularly use the computer have better reading skills, spatial skills and visual skills. The one drawback to being on the computer that it is done in isolation, away from the watchful eyes of parents. Some of the information accessed my not be good for young people. The younger mind may not be able to process the information correctly. Parents should keep a watchful eye without seeming to smother their growing child’s independence. Like all things in life, the internet is a two edged sword, one edge good, the other edge bad. Parents should use internet access as a teaching tool, helping their youngsters to understand the duplicity involved in life in general including the internet and the world wide web.
